Bryan Lee O’Malley is the creator of the popular Scott Pilgrim comic franchise, and we photographed him at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival after he spoke on the Fashion! panel. Bryan has been wearing glasses since he was 8 and while he used to wear titanium frames, he just purchased these two-tone Derome Brenner frames from Gogosha Optique in Los Angeles.
These frames are a project of Xavier Derôme and Aurélie Brenner, based in France as one of the very few, if not the only, eyewear companies that are 100% French. In fact, the two live and work out of a château in the Loire Valley making frames and jewelry by hand from French acetate. The eyewear is inspired by pop art and collaging, with the acetate assembled in layers – the play of transparencies make each object a unique piece. Notice how the two-tone fades softly from the darker brown to the opaque, and how well that plays off the funky rectangular shape. These are glasses that are as technically savvy as they are charming, a testament to the savoir-faire of the French.
