We photographed P.R. extraordinaire Candice Best in a pair of matte black “Whitehall” frames from D.L. Eyewear’s new collaboration with Spectacle. These 60s-inspired shades feature a bold, chunky frame, with thick arms and a slightly wider bridge. The team at Spectacle added the polarized, silver mirror lenses, giving the sunglasses a slick, hi-tech feel. The sunglasses are also made with a CR-39 Columbia Resin, a material that was used to make fuel tanks for Bomber Jets during WWII. Also known as allyl diglycol carbonate (not to be confused with the more familiar polycarbonate), the material is super durable and lightweight (half the weight of glass lenses), making them perfect to pair with eyewear. Technology aside, these frames also look amazing, adding the perfect finishing touch (tough yet chic!) to Candice’s equally amazing outfit.
Emily Ramshaw is the Assistant Fashion News Editor at Flare Magazine, and we asked her to try on these “Powell” frames, from Dan Levy’s new collaboration with Toronto boutique, Spectacle. The “D.L. Eyewear x Spectacle” collection features four of the brand’s signature frame styles, available in different lens combinations. Our favorites: the chunky “Whitehall” tortoiseshell frames with bright blue mirrored lenses, or a matte black pair of “McKenzie” frames with a unique “greenbird” gradient. Only 100 pairs were manufactured in total, making this a truly limited-edition collaboration.
Emily was skeptical at first about pulling off these Clubmaster-inspired “Powell” frames, but she quickly realized how stylish they could be. The “silver tortoise” colour is a muted yet refined take on tortoiseshell, while the grey gradient lenses complete the elegant look. Designed to be unisex, the “Powell” also has a retro feel, injecting a little bit of nostalgia mixed with a dash of sophistication and personality.
Want your own piece from the new collection? 48 pairs from the collaboration are available at Spectacle’s three locations in Toronto. The rest are available for purchase online at dleyewear.com.
Dan Levy is perhaps as well-known for his many hosting stints on TV as he is for his glasses – and for good reason too. Dan’s been wearing prescription frames since elementary school and has made eyewear part of his personal brand. Case in point: these “Whitehall” frames are from Dan’s new glasses line, “D.L. Eyewear.” A retro-inspired style that harks back to the playful shapes of the 1960s, these chunky frames are D.L.’s signature silhouette. Dan’s pair, in “Honey Tortoise,” is bold and striking, with a slightly marbled look. Perfect to fill out a larger face shape, or to create that exaggerated, oversized look,
Dan’s since traded in his peacoat for T-shirts and shorts in L.A., but he was back in Toronto recently to shoot the look-book and campaign imagery for D.L. Eyewear’s debut collection. We were invited to tag along for the shoot, and got a chance to chat about this new project with Dan himself. Check back here tomorrow for the full interview and behind-the-scenes images from the shoot.
